How do I use the Mote mobile app?

Mote for iOS is a reading and writing companion for iPhone and iPad. Everything you read, scan, record, or write lives in one library that you can come back to at any time.

Getting the app

Download Mote - Read Aloud & Writer from the iOS App Store. It runs on iPhone and iPad, and needs iOS 17 or later. Sign in with the same Mote account you use everywhere else.

What you can do

  • Read Aloud: play web pages and documents in natural voices, with each word highlighted as it is spoken. Adjust the speed between 0.5x and 2.0x and choose the voice you prefer.
  • Scan Text: point the camera at a book, a worksheet, or a sign, and Mote pulls the text out to read aloud. Scan a whole page or just a selected area.
  • Translation: hear content read back in another language, built into every reader.
  • Voice Recording: record a voice note and Mote turns it into clean, replayable text, highlighting the words as the original recording plays back.
  • Speech to Text: dictate instead of typing.
  • Writer: a built-in editor with on-device next-word predictions and read-back of your own writing.
  • Library and Collections: everything you add becomes a card in your library, sorted into color-coded Collections by class, project, or topic. Each item resumes from the last word you reached.

Adding things to your library

Use the iOS Share sheet to send a web page, PDF, image, or text selection to Mote from Safari or any other app. It opens straight into a reader, ready for Read Aloud, Translation, and everything else.

The Mote keyboard has been retired. To add content to Mote, use the Share sheet as described above.

Accessibility

The app includes the OpenDyslexic font, warm reading themes, larger text, and read-along highlighting. Your theme, font, size, and line spacing settings apply across every reader.

Plans

Mote for iOS is free to download, and the Writer's text prediction is free to use. Read Aloud, Scan Text, Voice Recording, dictation, Translation, cloud voices, and iCloud sync are part of the paid Mote Unlimited plan. The app does not sell plans through the App Store, so you upgrade at mote.com. If you already hold an Unlimited or Education plan, it applies here too.

Android

We do not currently offer an Android app.
