Reading aloud on iPhone and iPad with Mote

Read Aloud works on every kind of item in your library, using the same player throughout. Words are highlighted as they are spoken, so it is easy to follow along.

The player

The player sits above whatever you are reading. It has play and pause, skip back and forward, the current voice, and the speed.

Choosing a voice

Tap the voice picture to open the voice picker. Languages are grouped by region, and each voice can be previewed before you choose it. Your choice follows you across devices.

Changing the speed

Tap the speed pill to open the speed sheet. Anywhere between 0.5x and 2.0x works, either with the slider or the presets, and the change applies immediately without making the voice sound higher or lower.

Jumping to a word

Tap any word to start reading from there. If nothing is playing yet, tapping a word starts it.

Leaving the page

Audio keeps playing if you go back to your library, and a small player appears at the bottom of the screen. Tap it to return to what you were reading. Playback also continues when the app is in the background, with the usual controls on your lock screen, and pauses automatically for a call and when you unplug headphones.

Coming back later

Mote remembers where you were, so re-opening an item resumes from the last word you reached.

You can also Translating what you are reading, and change how the page looks: see Making reading comfortable: fonts, themes and text size.
