Mote Translator hours and pricing
Mote Translator is paid for in translation hours, which you buy in packs. There is no subscription, and no Mote plan includes Translator hours. You can buy hours on any Mote plan, including the free plan.
What a translation hour is
One translation hour is one hour of live translation into one language.
- A live session counts the time each translation language is open. 60 minutes into 1 language uses 1 hour. 20 minutes into 3 languages also uses 1 hour.
- Conversation mode counts one for one: 60 minutes of conversation uses 1 hour.
- A live session with captions only, and no translation language open, also counts one for one.
Time is counted in whole minutes, rounded up.

Anyone can buy any pack. The smaller packs suit one person. The 750 and 5,000-hour packs suit a team, a department or a whole school.

Your free trial hour
Every adult can get one free translation hour, once. When you have no hours, Unlock free trial appears on the Translation hours page and when you try to start a session. Answer two short questions and the hour is added to your balance, usually within a minute. The free hour expires 30 days after you get it, and it can't be shared with a group.
The free hour is offered once per person, and only when you have no hours available. If you have school hours, it appears once those run out.
Buying hours and checking your balance
- Go to translator.mote.com and sign in.
- Click Translation hours in the header.
- Choose a pack and pay by card.
- You come back to Translation hours, and your new hours appear within a minute.
The same page shows your balance in hours and minutes, and any hours that expire in the next 30 days. To compare packs before signing in, see translator.mote.com/pricing.
Sharing your hours
The hours you buy are yours to share. On the Translation hours page, each pack has an Available to menu:
- Just me: only you can use the pack.
- A group: make a named group, add people by email or CSV, and everyone in it can use the pack.
- Everyone at your school: if you belong to a Mote school, every adult at the school can use the pack.
New packs start as Just me, with one exception: if you belong to a Mote school and aren't its admin, a 750 or 5,000-hour pack starts as shared with everyone at your school. You can change any pack at any time. For step-by-step help, see Share Mote Translator hours with a group.
Which hours are used first
When you start a session, Mote Translator uses hours in this order:
- packs shared with a group you are in;
- your school's hours that are available to everyone, if your school has bought hours;
- your own hours.
Within each of these, the hours that expire first are used first.
Running out of hours
Your balance is checked when a session starts, never during one. A session that has started always runs to its end. If it uses more time than you have left, your balance goes below zero, and the difference comes off the next hours you buy.
If you try to start a session with no hours left, you see No translation hours left, with a link to buy more. If your school has run out, you can ask your school admin to add hours, or buy hours for yourself.
If your school has hours but has given them all to groups you aren't in, you see No translation hours available to you. Ask your school admin to add you to a group, or buy hours for yourself.
Who can use Mote Translator
