How to turn on translation in a Google Form for your students
Students can translate any question or answer in a Google Form into their own language, and hear it read aloud. The Mote Sidebar's Select text to translate button isn't used in Forms. Instead, the teacher turns on translation for each Form, and students use the sound buttons on the questions.
Before you start
- Teachers need the Mote Chrome Extension and a Mote Unlimited or school plan to turn it on.
- Students need the Mote Chrome Extension installed. They don't need to be logged in or have a paid plan.
Turning on translation (teacher)
- Open your Form in edit view.
- Click the Mote button at the top of the Form.
- Turn on Text-to-speech.
- Turn on Allow translation.
- Check the Read Aloud language. Mote suggests one based on your Form, and you can change it.
- Click Add text-to-speech.
Mote adds "(Read Aloud and translation enabled with Mote)" to your Form's description. Leave that text in place; the Chrome Extension uses it to find the Form.
Already set up Read Aloud without translation? Click the Mote button, turn on Allow translation, then click Save changes.
To check it before sharing, open the Form in Preview.
Translating a question (student)
- Hover over the sound button next to a question or answer. You'll see "Click to listen or hold to translate".
- Click and hold the sound button.
- The first time, choose your language.
- Mote shows the translation and reads it aloud. Use Copy translation to copy the text.
A single click still reads the original text aloud.
Not working?
- No hold to translate option: the Form has Read Aloud but not translation. The teacher needs to turn on Allow translation and save.
- No sound buttons at all: check the student has the Mote Chrome Extension installed, and that the "enabled with Mote" text is still in the Form description.
- Locked Mode quizzes: see Does Mote Auto Read Aloud for Google Forms work in Locked Mode?
