Mote for EDU Network Administrators - Approvals briefing
If you're an Educational IT / Network Administrator like Jason and Peter, then this article is designed to introduce you to Mote and cover the content you need to inform an approval process and implement Mote.
What is Mote?
Mote is a Chrome extension that helps both educators and students to create voice messages, convert text to speech and achieve more in less time. Mote offers a number of unique, powerful integrations with popular Google Workspace applications that enable teachers and students to:
- Use voice messaging to save valuable time while providing individualized instruction and feedback
- Use text-to-speech integrations to meet IEP and 504 plan requirements
- Translate content and create language learning materials
- Save time and stress
How do teachers and students use Mote?
Mote is primarily used as a Chrome extension, however Mote also offers a web recorder and an iOS application.
We recommend that both teachers and students have access to the Mote Chrome extension, because some of Mote's most valuable functionality requires students to have the Chrome extension installed.
How do teachers and students login to Mote?
Mote supports login through Google SSO and via email, with a login link sent to users. In order to use email login, users must be able to receive emails from hello@mote.com.
We recommend using Google SSO for login to enable the widest range of Mote integrations, and therefore recommend approving Mote for Google login.
Is Mote COPPA, FERPA, Ed Law 2D and GDPR compliant?
Yes - Mote has robust Privacy and Data Security procedures and processes in place.
Is Mote on the SDPC Resource Registry?
Yes - Mote is a member of the SDPC and has Statewide framework agreements in place for many US states. We welcome requests through the SDPC, especially from New York State districts who can now use the SDPC to access Ed Law 2D compliant framework agreements.
Is Mote WCAG compliant and accessible for all learners?
Yes. Mote's Accessibility Statement outlines our ongoing commitment to maximizing accessibility, and shares the results of our recent VPAT.
What permissions does the Mote Chrome Extension request? Why?
When installing the Mote Chrome Extension, the permission to "Read and change all your data on all websites" is requested. This rather broadly scoped permission allows Mote to integrate audio recording and playback within a large and growing number of web applications, as well as enabling our "Motepad" recorder to operate on most websites. We do not collect any data other than the data we need to operate the extension and to understand how people use Mote, and we do not change any data other than to operate the Mote extension.
What permissions does Mote request during Google login? Why?
Mote requests a limited set of Google Drive permissions so that we can upload audio to Google Drive and insert this into a Google Slide. Mote's permissions are strictly limited to just the audio files that you create with Mote.
What network and firewall settings does Mote need?
We recommend enabling access to the following domains:
