How do I allow Mote to use the microphone on managed Chromebooks?
This article is for Google Workspace administrators who manage microphone access on Chromebooks.
Most schools don't need to change anything. If you haven't set a microphone policy, Mote asks each student for microphone permission once, then records from there on.
If you restrict the microphone to certain websites
Some schools set Audio input to disabled and list the websites that may use the microphone under Audio input allowed URLs. If that's you, add Mote's extension to the list:
- In the Google Admin console, go to Devices > Chrome > Settings > Users & browsers > Hardware, then select the organizational unit your students are in.
-
Open Audio input allowed URLs and add this on its own line:
chrome-extension://ajphlblkfpppdpkgokiejbjfohfohhmk - Keep the entries you already have, such as Google Docs, Slides, Classroom, Forms or your learning platform. Mote still records on those pages whenever it can't use the extension.
- Click Save. Chromebooks pick up the change at their next policy refresh, or when Chrome restarts.
What this changes for students
- They record with no microphone prompt.
- Recordings keep going when they switch tabs.
- On shared Chromebooks that clear profiles at sign-out, students won't be asked for permission every session.
If you don't add it
- Mote keeps recording on every website you already allow, as it always has.
- Recordings made that way stay on the tab they started on.
- If no websites are allowed, students see a "Microphone blocked" message listing the two addresses to send to you: the site they're on and the Mote extension.
