What happens to my classes at the end of the school year?
Your classes don't expire. A class you set up in September is still there the following September, with the same name, the same join code and the same students. Nothing in Mote hides or deletes a class as it gets older.
What happens at the end of a year depends on how the class was made.
Classes imported from Google Classroom
Google Classroom is the source of truth for these. Mote checks with Google roughly once a week and follows whatever it finds, so you don't need to do anything to keep a class current:
- A student leaves the course in Google. They come off the Mote class too, usually within a week.
- You archive the course in Google. The Mote class is marked Archived and stops collecting activity. Restore the course in Google and the Mote class comes back with it.
- You delete the course in Google. The Mote class is deleted too.
- A student stays on the roster into a new school year. Nothing changes. They stay in the class and their work keeps counting.
You can also refresh a roster yourself at any time from the class page, rather than waiting for the weekly check.
Classes students joined with a link or QR code
There's no roster to check against here, so Mote treats a join as lasting for the school year it happened in. Once the new year is properly underway, last year's joins stop counting and new work is no longer recorded against the class.
To start a new year, share the same code again and have the new group join. The code doesn't change and doesn't expire, so a returning student can simply join again, which puts them back in the class for the year ahead.
Students who don't re-join stay on your class list and their earlier activity stays in your reports. It's only new activity that stops being attributed to the class.
Deleting a class
Deleting is permanent, and it's the only way to remove a class from your list yourself. It removes the class from your students' accounts too. Their motes, recordings and reading history are untouched, because those belong to the student rather than to the class.
If you'd rather keep the record, leave the class where it is. An old class with no current students costs you nothing beyond a row on your class page.
FAQs
Does Mote archive old classes automatically?
Only classes that came from Google Classroom, and only when you archive the course in Google. Classes you made with a link or QR code stay exactly as you left them until you delete them.
Will my students lose access to Mote when their class membership lapses?
No. Feature access comes from their account and your school's subscription, not from class membership. What changes is class reporting, not what a student can do.
What happens to teacher controls at the end of the year?
Any teacher controls you've set stay set. They're attached to the student rather than to the class, so they don't lapse when the year turns over.
Can I reuse the same join code next year?
Yes. The code doesn't change and doesn't expire.
