We're glad you asked!
Literally, mote means a tiny speck of something. We liked the name because we wanted to create a product that would unobtrusively live within other applications, helping users to be more productive and connected.
We also liked the fact that 'mote' sounds a bit like 'note', and that it has a lyrical quality. I just enjoy saying it. mote mote mote mote mote. OK, I'll stop now.
Finally, we liked the fact that no-one else was called 'mote'! It's quite hard to find a name that you like, and that hasn't already been used.
Origins of the word:
Old English mot, related to Dutch mot ‘dust, sawdust’.
