What is Mote's select area to read feature?

Mote's new select area to read feature allows users to click and drag over text that cannot be highlighted normally, such as in images, PDFs*, or scanned documents. Mote then reads the selected content aloud with word-by-word highlighting!

* PDF read aloud works on pages where the PDF is embedded in a web reader, but not where the PDF is hosted directly on a webpage. If the webpage URL ends with .pdf you will need to download  a copy of the PDF, and then upload it to Google Drive (or another service that supports PDF hosting) and use Mote Select Area on that page.

This feature is part of Mote 2.0 features, available for premium users, including School tier customers.

FAQ:

How do students use Select Area to Read?

Students will need to have the Mote Chrome Extension installed and have an Unlimited account to use the Select Area to Read feature. The feature can be found in Reading mode.

Do students need a paid account?

Yes. Students will need a paid account to access Select Area to Read along with other new Mote features. Having a paid account as a teacher will not give your students access to Select Area to Read.

I thought students could use Read Aloud in Google Forms for free?

Students can still use Read Aloud in Google Forms if their teacher activates it (this requires a paid teacher account). However, to use Read Aloud outside of Google Forms, they will need to be on the Unlimited tier.

Can I read aloud all PDF documents with Mote ?

Yes, but in some cases you may need to save it to your Google Drive first.

When a PDF is viewed directly in the browser, with a URL that ends with .pdf, we are unable to view it in the browser. Recommended solution:

  • Save the PDF to your Google Drive
  • Open the PDF file
  • Open the Mote Sidebar
  • Use the 'Select Area to Read' tool to read any text in the PDF
