Why is my select area translation not working?

One of the common reasons for translation not working is mistakenly using 'select area' instead of 'select area to translate'. The translation button must be used when wanting to translate into another language. Simply click and drag over the text you want to translate, and then select your language.

Attempting to translate by using the select area button and then changing the language, will simply read the text in English but with an accent.
